An unusual good bye: About Kristina Elliot
Written by Charu Jaiswal

“I saw her ghost on the bed,” said Kristina Elliott as she recounted that unforgettable day after her grandmother’s funeral.

She walked into her grandmother’s room and there lying on the bed was her grandmother. She was in the same nightgown that Kristina had received as a token of remembrance.

“It was her way of saying goodbye,” said Kristina. She was in Jamaica for her grandmother’s funeral. Her grandmother had lived an impressive 92 years, and even then, Kristina said she didn’t have enough time with her.

Kristina recounted pleasant summer days spent with her grandmother in Jamaica - making breakfast, watering plants and fetching water from the local well. As she narrated her memories, a pang of regret voiced its way to the surface of her story.

She regrets about not spending enough time with her “kind and compassionate” grandmother. A small frown creased Kristina’s forehead and she says, “It was hard to get over, but I did get over it. I realized that eventually everybody has to die and August 18th must have been the right time for my grandma.”
